Our Stories

AWON Dingbat 400.JPG

A Forum for our fondest remembrances.

To remember our fathers, to recount their stories, and to better understand each other . . . this page will provide a Forum for stories you may want to tell about your father, his training, his missions, his friends, his memories, his connections with you, and your sense of the void that his loss created in your life.

A few AWON stories were well told way back when . . . that started this ball rolling . . . thanks to Ann Mix and Susan Hadler in “Lost in the Victory.” Rising to their standard won’t be easy. But we can try ~ STARTING with just a few stories ~ by Members – with a link to their stories ~ alphabetically by name . . . in the same way we show (and link to) our Father Tributes.

Members and Member Prospects may feel CLOSER as a result – as they discover a few of the previously hidden commonalities we often share . . . “OMG, I remember feeling just like that!!!” And they’ll realize that we’re all family here.

Ken Underwood’s Story

AWON Board Member Ken Underwood tells the story of his Father, 1LT Kenneth Underwood (KIA in his P-38), his son, CPT K. H. Underwood (who flies F-15s), and a little about the man in between ~ whose daughter, Naomi was married on her Grandfather’s 100th birthday.

James Weatherly’s Story

Longtime AWON Member James Weatherly, a commercial, charter pilot by trade and a video producer by avocation ~ tells the story of his search for information on his Cousin, Harold B. McCarn ~ and how he is remembered at Henri-Chapelle American in Belgium.
