Kilroy!

AWON Dingbat 400.JPG

Lorin McCleary is the only one who found it.

When the “New” AWON Website was just a pup, we thought it might be fun to see who was seeing what ~ and to encourage visitors to look around the site. So we devised a challenge ~ based on the famous Kilroy graphic. Created by James Kilroy at the Quincy Shipyard to mark welds completed ~ so the Navy wouldn’t be charged twice. The Kilroy graphic was supposed to be painted over ~ but the need to get ships into the fight left no time for the niceties of painting the bulkheads. So navy men ~ and soldiers who were also being sent into the fight saw the graphic ~ & adopted it ~ for use all over Europe ~ to signify that the Americans were here.

The Kilroy graphic appears twice on the website ~ and the idea was that the first member who found either one would win a prize. Board Members weren’t eligible. But NO ONE found it ~ except a Board Member. So to this Board Member goes the prize ~ a framed image of Kilroy (and the place where the image can be found).
