The Memorial Service.
A detail from Fort Sam Houston
fired three volleys as a tribute to our fathers.
The always moving playing of
taps by a lone trumpeter.
An army brass group from Ft.
Sam Houston played patriotic music.
Ft. Sam Houston soldiers presented
and withdrew the colors
from another moving service
to remember our fathers.
After the service, AWONers placed
their roses on soldiers' graves.
Ellen Jones Blackburn with her
umbrella in Fort Sam's 92-degree heat.
The picture above was sent
to AWON Founder Annie Mix by local historian
Alfred Evans, who thought the
flyover we'd arranged was the best he'd ever seen,
and who
stumbled on our group while paying his own respects.
Alfred has been cataloging
all the headstones of those who died in WWII,
and says he'd be happy to take
a photo of any marker for anyone whose father
is buried there. Just contact
Alfred Evans, 527 Cicero, San Antonio, TX 78218.
