In honor of Nick's Dad, PFC Garner Mott, Nick and Darlene Mott, accompanied by their daughter, Kelly and grandson Braden, attended the First Marine Division Reunion in Philadelphia. Nick first met Garner's K-3-5 family in 1999 and there were eleven men who had served with Garner. This year, only two attended.

Nick was able to ask them, "Do you remember what time of day my father was killed?" Without any hesitation, Harry said, "I sure do. It was ten o'clock in the morning.  I knew it was bad." Then he retreated from further comments for a while. These same two comrades, Valton Burgin (Texas) and Harry Bender (Hawaii)  have worked diligently with Hugh Ambrose on the upcoming Pacific Project  to be completed in the spring or summer of 2009.  It is being filmed now in Australia. They served with Eugene Sledge, who was featured in "The War: Battles of Peleliu and Okinawa" from the Ken Burns series.

photos he took in April at Okinawa where Garner was killed. Harry knew Garner well,
served with him in K-3-5 at Peleliu and Okinawa. Hugh Ambrose took Harry on the
cruise to Okinawa in April working on the Pacific Miniseries.

It is always an honor to spend time with these great men who fought diligently for our freedom.  We also had the joy of being joined for the weekend by our AWON sisters, Janice Buterbaugh and Lynne Lecrone. Bob Thomas also was at the 1st Marine Divison Reunion and spent some time with us. The highlight of our time together was the Friday night Marine Band Concert. What great fellowship, in such a historical city!

Many thanks for the photos and text to Nick and Darlene Mott,
in memory of PFC Garner William Mott, KIA 7 May, 1945 in the Battle of Okinawa.
