I just learned of AWON when I received a copy of the January 2004 Star. I never knew of such an organization for "orphans" but became involved with my father's outfit, 17th AB Association. I was born 3 days before the BoB; my father was MIA three weeks later. The announcement of my birth was returned, marked MIA, 1/8/45. Two years ago, I met a man who was with my father when he was killed by a German 88 in the Battle of Dead Man's Ridge near Flamierge, Belgium. This man was taken POW for 4 months and was unable to report my father's death. He remained MIA as he was never found. |
