Fred Savard was drafted in September, 1943, one month after I was born. Fred completed basic and advanced Infantry training in Texas. He was shipped to Italy, and assigned to the 339th (Polar Bears) Regiment of the 85th Infantry Division (5th Army). The 85th broke out of the Cassino area in May, 1944, linked up with the forces from Anzio and together liberated Rome on June 4-5, 1944. Fred was promoted to Technical Sergeant and after the Northern Apennines campaign later that year drove to near the Swiss border by the end of the war. Fred was promoted to 2LT in the field, and earned the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge and the French Croix d'Guerre with Palm. He died on October 22, 1945 in Leghorn (Livorno), Italy while attached to another unit. |
