WWII Memorial • On the Mall

The Freedom Wall is centered behind the reflecting pool,
with the Lincoln Memorial beyond.

The Freedom Wall, where each of 4,000 stars represents a hundred lost
among the 405,973 Americans who died to keep us free.

The texture of 4.25" gold stars on the 85' wall signifies the magnitude of the sacrifice.

Here we mark the human price of freedom. The star is to remember S/SGT Donald E. Boettcher.

To Terry's Dad, we added many more over dedication weekend, including PVT John Riley Brown,
Nancy Sue Johnson's Dad, and 1LT John Peirson, Rik Peirson's Dad.

In spite of the Park Service request to not leave anything at the memorial, many people
honored loved ones with photos, flags and messages. Due to the overwhelming number of
items left, the Park Service changed its rule. Now, all tributes are collected and stored.

Photo of SGT Ernest Gilbert Radcliff left at the memorial by his daughter, Patty Temte.

This last picture was Patty's. The rest are Rik's.
