On 23 February, 1945, on the summit of the volcanic Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima, marines raise a flag that could be seen from a great distance. This Pulitzer Prize winning photo by AP Photographer Joe Rosenthal inspired the creation of the heroic Iwo Jima monument in Arlington National Cemetery.
